Orlando Health closed the South Seminole Hospital in Longwood on Saturday, which is being replaced with a new hospital in Lake Mary.

South Seminole Hospital has been operating for four decades.

“We’ve been planning for this for nearly two years,” said Antwan Williams, the chief operating officer of Orlando Health Lake Mary Hospital. “This community deserves this hospital.”

The team moved about 60 patients from the Longwood location to Lake Mary on Saturday morning.

The new hospital spans more than 450,000 square feet, significantly larger than the old one, which was less than half that size.

“We’ll be able to go from 140 beds here to nearly 250 beds here,” said Williams.

The emergency room next to the new hospital has been open since 2019.

The Lake Mary Hospital aims to provide Seminole County residents with easier access to health care.

“We love our dear I-4, but if we don’t have to get on it to drive downtown for care, having the opportunity to keep care close to home for this community is going to be a game changer and something that this community deserves,” said Williams.

  • Comprehensive cardiovascular care

The closure of South Seminole Hospital will bring new development opportunities to Longwood’s historic downtown. Orlando Health says it is brainstorming with the city.

“We’re going to reimagine that space,” said Williams. “We’ll always and still have an emergency department presence there and a lot more exciting things that I can’t talk about today.”

Although South Seminole Hospital is closed, Orlando Health says the emergency room will remain open as a 10-bed stand-alone space until the new ER in Longwood is ready, which is scheduled to open in February.
