Newsweek unveils 2025 World’s Best Hospitals
For the seventh year, Newsweek scoured the globe to rank the World’s Best Hospitals.
In partnership with data firm Statista, the publication identified 2,445 hospitals across 30 countries for the 2025 list, released Feb. 26.
While no health care facility in New Jersey landed on the publication’s Global Top 250 list, six appear on the United States ranking, which includes 420 hospitals across the country.
According to Newsweek, this year’s rankings were based on “significant enhancements” to the research process, including:
- An online survey of thousands of medical professionals
- Patient experience data
- Hospital quality metrics
- Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Implementation Surveys
- And new for 2025: a new bibliometric score, which “was incorporated as a proxy for reputation based on metrics tied more closely to research output rather than expert opinion,” according to Newsweek’s methodology.
Newsweek noted that global list does not include specialized hospitals.
The top two hospitals in the world, according to Newsweek, are based in the U.S.:
- No. 1: Mayo Clinic; Rochester, Minn.
- No. 2: Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
“These rankings showcase the hospitals that are setting the standard for medical excellence, innovation, and patient-centered care on a global scale,” Alexis Kayser, Newsweek’s health care editor, said in a statement.
“By incorporating new quality metrics and patient-reported outcomes, this year’s list provides an even more comprehensive view of the institutions leading the way in health care … and advancing the future of medicine,” Kayser added.

In addition to its global list, Newsweek broke down rankings by country. In New Jersey, six made the cut for the U.S.:
- No. 51: Morristown Medical Center, Morristown | Atlantic Health System
- No. 59: Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack | Hackensack Meridian Health
- No. 146: The Valley Hospital, Paramus | Valley Health System
- No. 183: Overlook Medical Center, Summit| Atlantic Health System
- No. 255: Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Englewood | Englewood Health
- No. 393:Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch | RWJBarnabas Health
All six made last year’s list, too. Englewood Health and Monmouth Medical Center jumped several places from 2024, while the first four dropped a few notches.
Atlantic Health released a statement Feb. 26, noting Morristown Medical Center’s repeated top finish among Garden State hospitals. It also said both Morristown and Overlook medical centers have made the list all seven years.
“Everything we do centers around providing the highest quality patient care, and to be recognized as a world’s best hospital by Newsweek, is deeply humbling and a well-deserved recognition for our exceptional medical staff, nurses and all team members who are selflessly dedicated to healing,” said Trish O’Keefe, president, Morristown Medical Center.
Stephanie Schwartz, president of Overlook Medical Center, said it was “an incredible honor to be recognized again among the World’s Best by Newsweek, and a direct reflection of how Overlook places quality, safety and exceptional care at the center of everything we do.
