Cleveland Clinic expands global reach with new Uzbekistan hospital project

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Clinic and a leading private university in Uzbekistan will collaborate on the launch of a new hospital in the Central Asia country, the Clinic recently announced.

Construction of the Central Asian University Hospital, located in the Tashkent region of Uzbekistan on the Central Asian University medical campus, is scheduled to begin this year.

Uzbekistan lies roughly between the Caspian Sea and China, north of Afghanistan.

The new 120-bed hospital will have the capacity to care for up to 269,000 patients annually, the Clinic said.

This early-stage collaboration ensures that Central Asian University Hospital will be designed from the ground up based on the Cleveland Clinic model of care, which includes comprehensive medical specialties and world-class medical equipment, the Clinic said.

“Cooperation with Cleveland Clinic is a landmark step in shaping the future model of medicine and medical education in Uzbekistan,” said Kamran Gulamov, Rector of Central Asian University. “We are gaining access to global expertise and best healthcare practices, which will have a long-term impact on future doctors and patients.”

As part of this collaboration, Central Asian University Hospital has become a provisional member of the Cleveland Clinic Connected program.

Cleveland Clinic Connected is building a global network of independent, quality-focused health organizations. The program enables hospitals and healthcare organizations around the world to connect with Cleveland Clinic’s experts to enhance patient care, the Clinic said.

Central Asian University Hospital is working to meet the requirements to become a full Cleveland Clinic Connected member, the Clinic said.

As part of this long-term strategic agreement, Central Asian University Hospital’s physicians will be able to request consultations with Clinic physicians on complex cases.

Central Asian University’s leaders will have access to Cleveland Clinic’s various educational programs and advanced training, observational opportunities and an exchange program.

In addition, Central Asian University’s patients may be referred to Cleveland Clinic international hospitals.

“We are honored to begin our collaboration with CAU to enhance care for patients in Uzbekistan,” said Dr. Tommaso Falcone, Cleveland Clinic executive vice president and president of international and emerging markets. “Part of our mission is to bring Cleveland Clinic care to patients around the world. Through this collaboration, we will work together to improve access to high-quality healthcare.”

Other Cleveland Clinic Connects projects include the construction of a new hospital in Vietnam, and collaborations with medical centers in southeastern Indiana and Florida.
