Broadlawns Medical Center selects Proctor Lureman as new president, CEO
The search is over for a new chief executive officer of Broadlawns Medical Center.
The Broadlawns Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to approve Proctor Lureman, vice president of operations for UnityPoint Health-Des Moines, as the public hospital’s new top administrator. He will step in as president and CEO effective July 15.
The hospital board approved the CEO selection from a conference room in the hospital’s basement as severe weather rolled through Iowa Tuesday afternoon. A tornado warning interrupted the meeting shortly after board members cast their vote.
Lureman is a 30-year resident of Des Moines and has 25 years of experience in hospital operations and physician group management, according to a short biography presented by the board.
As the current vice president of operations for the UnityPoint Health system in Des Moines, Lureman oversees a team of more than 200 advanced medical providers and 1,200 medical staff. He has a bachelor’s degree and a master of business administration from Drake University.
“I am humbled to join Broadlawns and grateful to the Board of Trustees for trusting me to lead such a dedicated team who ensure the residents of Polk County have a healthcare home,” Proctor Lureman said in a statement. “I have lived in this community for more than 30 years and am invested and passionate about working with Broadlawns’ inspired professionals and its partners, who have built such an exceptional organization.”
Lureman was selected by a committee formed in January to conduct a nationwide search for a new CEO. Members of the search committee included Broadlawns physicians, frontline staff, community representatives and a subset of the Board of Trustees.
“I was one of the members of the CEO search committee and I share the opinion that Proctor Lureman’s exceptional leadership qualities and unwavering commitment to both the community and Broadlawns were evident throughout the selection process,” Dave Miglin, chair of the Broadlawns’ board of trustees, said during Tuesday’s meeting. “We eagerly anticipate his arrival and hold firm confidence that he will excel as a leader for Broadlawns within the organization and throughout Polk County.”
Broadlawns is Polk County’s safety net provider and the vast majority of its patients rely on public health insurance, such as Medicaid. It has 200 beds and employs more than 1,200 staff, including more than 200 physicians.
It’s annual budget surpasses $200 million. As the public hospital, it levies more than $75 million a year in property taxes. It is also funded by payments from public and private health insurance programs
The selection of a new CEO comes six months after the former CEO, Anthony Coleman, abruptly announced his departure after less than two years as the hospital’s top administrator. He had accepted a job as CEO of Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center, which is part of the George Washington University health system, in Washington, D.C.

The hospital reached a $800,000 settlement agreement with Coleman shortly after his resignation in November, which included his annual salary of $550,000 through the end of 2024 and a lump sum of $134,000 for any bonus Coleman may have been entitled to during his employment.
As part of the severance payments, Coleman agreed not to sue Broadlawns for claims arising from or related to his employment. Coleman also agreed not to pursue or accept future employment with Broadlawns in the future.
Coleman had told Axios Des Moines in November he planned to donate the $800,000 in severance benefits to charity.
